REFLECTION ON THE TEACHING OF “THE MULTIPLICATION ALGORITM OF THE 3rd GRADE OF PRIMARY SCHOOL” THROUGH VTR

By Marsigit
OVERVIEW

Recently study in Indonesia indicated that the use of VTR (Video Tape Recorder) in the teacher training program was perceived by the teachers as good and useful. There is a higher frequency to use the VTR to promote teachers’ professional development in Japan and in developed countries; however, in Indonesia, it pops up like a jack-in-the-box. VTR for teacher education and reform movement in Mathematics Education, specifically for developing lesson study has some benefits as: a) short summary of the lesson with emphasis on major problems in the lesson, b) components of the lesson and main events in the class, and, c) possible issues for discussion and reflection with teachers observing the lesson (Isoda, M., 2006).
Katagiri, S (2004) listed the types of mathematical thinking as mathematical attitudes, mathematical thinking related to mathematical methods, and mathematical thinking related to mathematical contents. This identification of mathematical thinking by Katagiri can be the starting point to reflect any mathematics teaching learning process at school as for to reflect the teaching of “the multiplication algoritm of the 3rd grade of primary school” by Mr. Hideyuki Muramoto; then, the VTR of this lesson will be targeted for the series of activities: observation and reflection.
Characterizing The Lesson from Lesson Plan
The preliminary characteristics of Muramoto’s teaching are stipulated in the Lesson Plan such as follows:
a. Theme : Third grade mathematics lessons that foster students’ ability to use what they learned before to solve problems and make connections in order to solve problems in new learning situations
b. Method: Teaching “the Multiplication algorithm (1)” in a way that develops students who can use what they learned before to solve problems in new learning situations by making connections.
c. Goals of the Unit: To be able to think about how to carry out the calculation of a 2-digit number x a 1-digit number by using what was previously learned about multiplication (mathematical thinking).
d. Scenario of Teaching
1) Developing teaching that help students to become aware of the connection between what they learned before and what they are learning now and use previously learned knowledge to overcome obstacles in a new situation.
2) Connections between previously learned knowledge and new learning
3) Representing a problem situation with diagrams based on the idea of “how many times as much as a unit quantity” consistently and helping students to understand the situation and solution of the problem more clearly.
4) Developing lessons that incorporate this idea and help students to use the diagram to think
Characterizing the Lesson through VTR
a. The problem of video taping
- The quality of pictures are relatively good
- The single camera made the limitation of landscaping the class
- The small caption in the screen helps to catch more the picture of the class
b. The components of the lesson
- The whole class teaching has reduced the complexity of class interaction into the simple or linear pattern of interaction between teacher and students.
- Highlighting the certain ideas from certain student has ignored the other students’ ideas.
- Highlighting the certain aspect of mathematical thinking of a certain students endanger the total management of the class.
c. Encouraging and uncovering students’ mathematical thinking
- Teacher’s effort in encouraging and uncovering students’ mathematical thinking were effective enough.
- Teacher’s effort in serving individual students has not been effective yet.
- Some of the students were able to perform mathematical thinking
- Teacher was able to achieve the goal of the lesson
- Mathematical thinking of a certain students can be a model for others.
- Different students, in the same allocation of time, did similar problems by employing different methods to cultivate the similar results.
- Students’ discussion among themselves has not emerged yet.
- Students’ involvements in classroom management were still limited.
- Teacher has effectively employed the proper teaching aids.
CONCLUSION
The conclusion of the paper highlights some problems as follows:
- The problem of the reduction of the complexity of classroom interaction into the simple or linear pattern between teacher and his students.
- The problem of landscaping the whole classroom activities
- The negative correlation between focusing a certain aspect of students thinking and reducing the variant of their learning contexts.
- The problem of the pattern for the relation for promoting individual needs and the whole classroom management.
- The problem of the gap amongst teachers’ effort (including methods and media), students’ findings and the concept/understanding/rational of the vertical way of calculating 23 times 3.
- The problem of matching the theory of the concept of mathematical thinking and the factual condition of students’ mathematical thinking.
- The problem of mathematical thinking of the lower achievement students.
- The problem of exploring intrinsic, extrinsic and systemic of mathematical thinking.

Constructing Mathematics Activity at Group-Discussion of The 6th Grade Students Of Primary Schools

By Marsigit
Introduction
This research investigated teacher’s role and students’ activities to construct the comprehensive characteristics of numbers pattern in mathematics teaching at the 6th grade students of primary school. The aim of the study is to explore the role of teacher and the students’ activities in three different cycle of classroom action research. The activities are interpreted in the context of the students’ efforts to construct the comprehensive characteristics of numbers pattern. The analysis focuses on the way in which the teacher’s and students’ activities developed in their interactions. This study bounds territory in which events or processes occurred over a specified period. The framework of research is teaching action in mathematics teaching of Primary School Grade VI. Teacher is perceived to be co-worker in doing research and the researcher is not considered to an outside expert. Thus, the approach of the research is an evaluative-reflective-participatory-critical collaborative enquiry of teaching. In this research we have developed three cycles of classroom action research (CAR) of different teaching schemas which forms part of common practice in an educational setting. They aimed to extend children’s learning from cycle 1 to cycle 3 provide the students’ experience to develop their concepts.
The 1st cycle
In the first cycle, the teacher aimed the students to have some competencies to characterize some pattern of numbers producing by doing addition from any kind of two reversible numbers. The schema of teaching learning process in the 1st cycle was characterized as follows. Firstly, the teacher introduced the lesson, delivered information, posed the problems and explained what the students should do in the following activities. Secondly, having had ordering the students to produce additions from any kind of two reversible numbers, the teacher let the students to work in group-discussion; totally there were 8 group-discussions, each consisted of 4 students. Thirdly, the teacher encouraged the students to present their results of discussions and then strive to conclude the results. In this cycle the teacher developed worksheets and distributed them before the students work in their group-discussions.
The first step in the analysis was to provide a broad description of the sequence of events during the 1st cycle. In the 1st cycle it was recorded that there was considerable variation in terms of student’s activities. The recorded detail brief descriptions of the sessions were used to refer to analyze and to get feedback for preparing the 2nd cycle. In this session we found that there are some characteristics of students’ efforts to construct their knowledge. Some students indicated that they activities were routine execution of tasks; however, ideas are developed and they try to construct the concepts. Interaction in 1st cycle was characterized as an obvious discussion to share understanding among the children.
The students’ activity reflects their deep engagement and interest in the problem solving task There was no indication that the students has a conflict mode to reflects disagreement, however the dominantly role of a certain student begun to be an evident. It was indicated that with the developed schema of teaching learning processes the teacher did not explicitly force their students to pursue the aims of teaching. On the other hand, she encouraged students’ activities towards the achievement of goals by taking the benefits from asymmetrical relationship between teacher and their students and among the students themselves in group-discussion. Some aspects of students’ constructions of their knowledge were invisible and some of them were invisible.
The 2nd cycle
In the 2nd cycle, the teacher aimed the students to have some competencies to characterize some pattern of numbers producing by doing subtraction from any kind of two reversible numbers. The schema of teaching learning process in the 2nd cycle was characterized as follows. Firstly, the teacher introduced the lesson, delivered information, posed the problems and explained what the students should do in the following activities. Secondly, having had ordering the students to produce subtractions from any kind of two reversible numbers, the teacher let the students to work in group-discussion; totally there were 8 group-discussions, each consisted of 4 students. Thirdly, the teacher encouraged the students to present their results of discussions and then strive to conclude the results. In this cycle the teacher developed worksheets and distributed them before the students work in their group-discussions.
The analysis of session in the 2nd cycle examines the ways in which teacher’s approach and process of teaching tasks in their small-group activities. It aims at highlighting students’ activities and situated positions towards knowledge, learning to construct their knowledge. In this session, students are seen as dynamic and contextual in nature, being socially constructed in their interactions small-group discussions. The students’ activity reflects their deep engagement and interest in the problem solving task. There were no indications that the students did not focus on the task. Interaction in 2nd cycle was characterized as an obvious collaborative interaction. The students were not working individually in the group but developed their ideas together. The teacher encouraged students’ activities towards the achievement of goals by taking the benefits from asymmetrical relationship between teacher and their students and among the students themselves in group-discussion.
There were several examples of conversations in which some students did not want their talking to be heard by the teacher; on the other word, the teacher needed to give enough time for them to have a discussion in a certain group. There was no indication that the student has a conflict mode to reflect disagreement. In this entire session there was no indication of the students to refuse to engage in certain activity. Some aspects of students’ constructions of their knowledge were visible and some of them were invisible.
The 3rd cycle
In the 3rd cycle, the teacher aimed the students to have some competencies to characterize some pattern of numbers producing by doing multiplication from any kind of two reversible numbers. The schema of teaching learning process in the 3rd cycle was characterized as follows. Firstly, the teacher introduced the lesson, delivered information, posed the problems and explained what the students should do in the following activities. Secondly, having had ordering the students to produce multiplications from any kind of two reversible numbers, the teacher let the students to work in group-discussion; totally there were 8 group-discussions, each consisted of 4 students. Thirdly, the teacher encouraged the students to present their results of discussions and then strive to conclude the results. In this cycle the teacher developed worksheets and distributed them before the students work in their group-discussions.
In this session, collaborations in group-discussion reflected balancing in students’ social status and power. The constructive interaction among the students reflects various different understandings in a rational way by giving judgments and justifications. This led them to share their understanding of the concepts; it was indicated by their showing for helping and explaining for the purpose of assisting the other to understand the problems. In this session, there were indications that different group-discussion require different situational teacher intervention. The students’ activity reflects their deep engagement and interest in the problem solving task
There was no indication that the students have a conflict mode to reflect disagreement. The teacher encouraged students’ activities towards the achievement of goals by taking the benefits from asymmetrical relationship between teacher and their students and among the students themselves in group-discussion. The results of observations indicated that, among the students, there were various interests of different activities and different way to construct their activities. Some of the children have a separate discussion in the same group-discussion; while others initiated a variety of activities; others kept on the task and the left concentrated to prepare the answer orally the teacher’s question. Most aspects of students’ constructions of their knowledge were visible.
Results
In this study we have been concerned with describing and understanding interactions between teacher and their students and among the students themselves in group-discussions. The theoretical notions from which our analysis started were activity theory, constructive and the concept of guided participation. In particular, the students’ activities and the teacher’s role to encourage them are aspects that were highlighted in this study. Theoretical framework indicated that that the teacher used to emphasize her goal and then directs the students towards it. In group-discussions setting, the unfolding and development of activities is seen both implicitly and explicitly, also there were indications that there were opportunities for students to develop their understanding. When activities did not have a clear endpoint, both the teacher was able to influence the course of the activity, in line with her own interests.
The teacher’s role in the activity would be difficult to interpret in the absence of information about the principles group-discussions. The teacher’s perceptions of her role in supporting children’s learning and their intentions for the activity seemed to be changed from one cycle to the next one; and in the entire her activities this also seemed to be evident; one of indication was that the fact that in the initial interviews the teacher described her intentions in general terms and saw the building activity as a vehicle for general cognitive development was not so clear. Teacher’s introductions at any cycle may then be seen as related to the general aims which were adaptable to the development of the individual child. The teacher’s role became one of important factors for their children to develop their cognitive among their constraints in group-discussions. These important roles were not only evident in her having an awareness of the developmental goals, but also the knowledge of their students, her sensitivities to the student’s interests and motivation.
There were indications that in each cycle the students were not only simply behave as the performer of the activities but also as the active agent in constructing the activities themselves. Some students were not only remained in their role as the constructor in much of the sessions but also actively adopted other roles while the teacher taking on the role of assistant. The strike effect of activity in group-discussions was that conversational skill of them became the evident; some of them deliver their own initiations, and the other students seemed to take in such a defensive position on their arguments. By observing on the transitions from one activity to another, it became evident that an important aspect of the interaction was concerned with activities of negotiation. Students’ way to achieve the tasks seemed to be different; some did them through quiet persistence and others through explicit way.

PHILOSOPHICAL EXPLANATION ON MATHEMATICAL EXPERIENCES OF THE FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS

By Marsigit
Introduction
This article strives to explain philosophically on the students’ experiences on decimal numeration which were emerged in the research on The Effect of Epistemic Fidelity On Teaching Decimal Numeration With Physical Materials by Kaye Stacey et al (2001). The use of linear arithmetic blocks (LAB) was associated with more active engagement by students and deeper discussion than that of multi-base arithmetic blocks (MAB). Epistemic fidelity is critical to facilitate teaching with the models, but Stacey, K, et al (p.199-221, 2001) attributed the enhanced environment to the greater accessibility of the LAB material. This research and its results exhibits the writer to employ Greimas’ Structural Analyses, Kant’s theory of double-affection and other notions of philosophical explanation in order to uncover concepts behind the aspects of the process as well as the results of the research. The in-depth explanations of the nature of mathematical experiences, specifically about the effect of epistemic fidelity on teaching decimal numeration with physical materials, will expose not a single truth of its nature due to the fact that they will be put in the area of philosophy.
The level of philosophical discussion have their characteristics such as the need to cross-check as well as to compare with several point of views independently, to construct general theory of subject related. Mackenzie, J.S, (1917), stated that philosophy has to take account of the general results of the investigations of all sciences to endeavour or to construct a general theory. To achieve the purpose the writer employ some philosophical approaches such as interpretation, internal coherences, idealisation, comparison, analogy and description. Based on those approaches, accordingly, the writer adapts Greimas’ Hermenetics Structural Analyses to show the inter-relationship among the components of decimal numeration teaching with physical materials as it was carried out as part of the research of Kaye Stacey et al. To achieve the objective i.e the general theory of the related subject, the writer strive to implement the theory of ‘double-affection’ to the scheme of Greimas’ Hermenitics Structural Analyses with the context of the process and the results of the research, conducted by Stacey, K, et al, (2001), on the effect of epistemic fidelity and accessibility on teaching with physical material.
Greimas’ Hermenitics Structural Analyses
In that scheme, the student was put into the centre of the mathematical teaching learning activities; the teacher has a role as the ‘the sender’ as well as the ‘supporter’ in such a way that their students learn physical material as an object of learning; the ‘transaction’ between the teacher and their students happened if there is a motivation of the students to learn the objects i.e. physical material; the ‘constraints’ need to be considered and to be anticipated as well as to be found its solutions in such away that the students are able to interact with their physical material; the ‘anti-subject’ arises if there is extremely constraints such as bullying, un-expected accident etc. in such a way that the students are not able to interact with their physical material mathematical objects; the ‘receivers’ are the people or the agents that takes the benefit of the students’ interaction with their objects, therefore, the student him/herself cam be perceived as ‘receiver’.
The Myth Of Double Affection
The theory of double affection is a classical attempt to rescue Kant’s account of perceptual awareness from what is alleged to be a glaring inconsistency (Gram, S.M, in Werkmeister, W.H, 1975). According to Kant, ‘to be affected by anything ‘ is to experience the effect of an object upon the faculty of representation (ibid, p.29). Kant provides two kinds of objects which affect the subject: there are ‘thing in themselves’ which affect the self; and there are ‘appearances in themselves’ which act on our sensibility and are independent of whatever characteristics attach to our sensory receptors (Werkmeister, W.H, 1975). Facing this Kant’s notion, Gram, S.M, in Werkmeister, W.H, (1975) delivered the following argument:
“ Suppose we say that what affects our sensibility is ‘a thing in itself’. This account of what affects us, however, prevents us from distinguishing between a case in which somebody perceives an object and the quite different case in which an object exert a merely causal influence on the body of the perceiver. This can be seen by consulting an elementary fact of perception. The fact is that to perceive anything is to perceive it under ‘a certain description’. If this were not the case, then we could not distinguish between the perceiving of one object rather than another. But if we must always perceive something under a description, to say that we are affected by ‘a thing in itself’ when we perceive anything would imply that we perceive that objects satisfy certain descriptions. And this would contradict the claim that we cannot be perceptually acquainted with ‘a thing in itself’.
The above propositions were delivered to argue Kant’s description that affection as the experience of the ‘effect’ of an object on our sensory apparatus; whilst, the dilemma facing Kant’s theory has nothing to do with the quite separate issue of whether what is related to sensibility is the effect of an object rather than the object itself; and, the issue concerns the nature of the object which is immediately present to perceptual awareness rather than the casual relation in which it might stand to some further object. The notion of affection does not, however, become fully clear unless we can specify the kind of object which can stand in such a relation to our sensibility (ibid, p.29). He then erected the next dilemma as shown the following:
“If ‘a thing in itself’ can act upon our sensory organs even though we cannot perceive it to satisfy any description at all, we would not be able to distinguish between ‘the situation ‘ in which an object casually affects our bodies in certain ways and we do not perceive the effects of that action from the quite different situation in which the object exerts such as influence and we do perceive it. If the first affection is to hold between ‘a thing in itself’ and ‘an act of perceptual awareness, we would have to be able to perceive ‘thing in themselves’ under descriptions appropriate to them or obliterate the distinction between causation and perceptual awareness”.
What we can learn is that there should be any other relation between ‘thing in themselves’ and affection. Kant asserted that ‘space’ and ‘time’ are forms of our sensibility; what affects our sensibility is an object that has ‘spatial’ or ‘temporal’ characteristics i.e. a phenomenal object. If the object which affects the forms of our sensibility cannot itself have ‘spatio-temporal’ characteristics, then what affects us must, on Kant’s theory, be a thing in itself . Empirical affection does not require that the objects in our sensory field lack spatio-temporal characteristics; while, transcendental affection countenances the existence of objects which affect ego in themselves. However, the distinction between these two kinds of perception is still a myth (ibid 32-33).
Research on The Effect Of Epistemic Fidelity On Tea-ching Decimal Numeration With Physical Materials by Kaye Stacey et al (2001)
The results of the research on the effect of epistemic fidelity and accessibility on teaching with physical material (Stacey, K, et al, 2001) comes to some conclusion that: 1) the are numbers of favor differences of different model of physical material (LAB and MAB), 2) the most striking difference between the two models was their ability to model number density, with LAB found to be the superior model in this respect, 3) teaching with physical materials is an area of great difficulty for many students, 4) students did not attend to the volume relationships embedded in MAB and struggled to remember the names, rather than immediately appreciating the sense behind them, 5) MAB students experienced difficulty generalizing to numbers beyond the model due to their difficulties with volume and apparent dimensional shifts in their perceptions of the components, 6) LAB appeared to promote richer engagement in the classroom than MAB due to its greater accessibility (detail results of the research, refer to Educational Studies in Mathematics 47: 199-221, 2001).
It was acknowledged by the researchers that some manipulative materials can be distracting and open misinterpretation; teachers could overestimate the value of physical materials because they are already familiar with the concepts being presented (Ball in Kaye, et al, 2001). It also stated that, Meira (1998), the mechanical devices became ‘visible’ as things that required explanation, rather than ‘invisible’ resources for making the mathematics more accessible. Having considered those notions of the constraints in employing physical materials in teaching mathematics and having learnt the document of the process and the results of the research, the writer perceives that the research consists a lot of important critical concepts that need to be developed as the notions in the implementation of mathematics teaching as well as the notions of theoretical and or philosophical discussions. In term of theoretical concept, those important critical concepts consist of: 1) epistemic fidelity, 2) the posing problems devices, 3) the link between the features of the device and the target knowledge, 4) something objective, 5) students’ engagement, and 6) accessibility. From the explanation, it can be inferred that the objective of this paper is to investigate general theory of the aspects of mathematics teaching learning processes with the context of the process and the results of the research conducted by Stacey, K, et al, (2001), on the effect of epistemic fidelity and accessibility on teaching with physical material.
Philosophical Explanation on Mathematical Experience
In their theoretical review of the stated research, Stacey, K, et al, (2001) indicated that epistemic fidelity of the material is one of the factors influences the transparency of instructional material. They also indicated that epistemic fidelity of the material depends on the materials themselves in which the mathematical domain being represented does not depend on their use by students. Explicitly, they defined that the epistemic fidelity of an instructional material is a measure of the quality of analogical mapping between the features of the material and the target knowledge domain. Further, they stated that epistemic fidelity of a model depends on the relationship of features intrinsic in the model to target mathematical structure, and is independent of user characteristics. On the other hand, Gram, S.M. (1975) provides a clear and comprehensive statement, of the case that likely as what Stacey, K., et al infer as epistemic fidelity, that he called ‘double affection’. He claimed that what affects our sensibility is ‘a phenomenal object’; it allowing anything which has spatial or temporal characteristics to count as such an object. Further he stated that, according to Kant, sensibility is the capacity (that the researcher claimed as ‘quality’) for receiving representations through the mode in which we are affected by objects.
From those two points of view we may learn that although there similarities of the claim of the relation between subject and object of learning, although the writer could not identify what did they mean by ‘a measure of the quality of analogical mapping between the features of the material and the target knowledge domain’, except that of its category consists of excellent, good, satisfactory and unsatisfactory. If the researchers meant that epistemic fidelity is the capacity for receiving representations through the mode in which we are affected by objects, the next problem is that we need to clarify them. Kant implied that affection is to be partially defined in terms of a relation in which an object stands to certain spatio-temporal forms; and this kind of relationship is specified in terms of a connection between an object and these forms, not in term of an object exhibiting these forms and sensibility. It is important here to conclude that, according to Kant, if the object which affects the forms of our sensibility cannot itself have spatio-temporal characteristics, then what affects us must be ‘a thing in itself’(in which the researchers indicated it as ‘material in themselves’). It seemed that the researchers did not specify the affect of the different characteristics of the object in term of ‘appearances in themselves’ and ‘things in themselves’.
Next, they also indicated that the ‘accessibility’ of the materials is a collection or psychological factors that arise in the use of the materials by students but which are not specific to particular students (ibid. p. 2001); further it was stated that accessibility of a model of physical material depends on characteristics of likely users interacting with features of the model; accessibility, stands above the detailed analyses of particular tasks in particular classrooms that Meira (1998) in Stacy (2001) has traced in his quest for ‘transparency’. Accordingly, there are at least two issues (both social and psychological) that may impact of LAB and MAB. In LAB the issues consists of: 1) students’ confusing the organizer rods with the value of the component and 2) students’ confusing about the left-right positioning of the place value columns. It is clear that what the researcher infer by ‘accessibility’ is something related to the subject that what inferred by Kant as ‘sensibility’.
Differences accessibility were actually found that students in MAB group experienced confusion with remembering the new names components. There was no such confusion in the LAB group. How numbers are represented? In MAB group, the students did not understand that the components relative value is based on their volume. In term of ability to generalise beyond the model, the students were confused by the apparent dimensional shift and appeared to be looking for a forth dimension. Were the different learning outcomes related to differences in epistemic fidelity or accessibility? The LAB model was more effective on decimal numeration; the LAB model was found to more transparent model for numeration; the LAB model was more effective model of number density; the LAB model should also be better model for rounding decimal number.
In term of the differences between the group, the LAB model was more favourable and the LAB model appeared to promote richer engagement in the classroom due to greater accessibility. The Year 5 students appeared reluctant to use the MAB; it was a constant struggle to get them to use it. There was more discussion and exchange the ideas in the LAB group and there more significantly episodes of talk referring to the LAB model than the MAB model. There was evidence that LAB students spontaneously exploring new ideas, which did not occur with students using MAB. When LAB was not available, students made connections with other physical representations, such as ruler lengths and MAB; One student pointed out “LAB is another type of MAB”; “These are the exact same thing”. The LAB group scored higher than the MAB group on every measure of attitude(Likert items). In term of the attitude, the LAB group is typified by one student’s comment: ”Learning what the numbers mean –how big they were-just from length, was the best”.
Conclusion
The research has given the researchers an insight into the different roles of epistemic fidelity and accessibility of physical instructional material. The researchers hypothesise that epistemic fidelity is necessary for securely grounded teaching of concept with a model, whereas accessibility promotes rich classroom engagement. Epistemic fidelity and accessibility have different roles in establishment transparency. From all of those findings, the writer strives to develop the method to uncover what are there behind the concepts.
Over all, we regard to the students’ status of mathematical knowledge resulted by manipulating with physical materials, in the schema of Greimas’ Hermenetics Structural Analyses. If the distinction between the two kinds of perception is still a myth, then we can still argue it on the status of mathematical knowledge. As it was acknowledged by the researchers that some manipulative materials can be distracting and open misinterpretation; it can be explain with the theory of double-affection due to the fact that the teachers are already familiar with the concepts being presented. The writer perceives that Kant’s notion of appearance in them selves and thing in themselves are useful to explain the issues of visibility and /or invisibility of the mechanical device.
The writer emphasizes that the different context, i.e. in term of time and space as it was notified by Kant, may influence students perception of the objects. Therefore, teachers need to employ those kind of factors as supporting one in teaching learning of mathematics. The link between the features of the device and the target knowledge was very intensively to be discussed by Kant in his Critical of Pure Reason. General theory of the aspects of mathematics teaching learning processes is to pursue in term of the relation of student as a subject and physical material as an object in the schema of Greimas’ Hermenetics Structural Analyses. The effort to pursue those relationships will determine the extent of the quality of philosophical point of view.

Penggunaan Kalkulator Dalam Pembelajaran Matematika di SMK

Peneliti: Retno Siswanto
Pembimbing: Marsigit
a. proses pemahaman tentang arti penting kalkulator grafik.
d. proses penafsiran tampilan layar kalkulator grafikdan proses menarik kesimpulan
Proses pertama yaitu proses pemahaman tentang arti penting kalkulator grafik.
a) Tampilan pertama
a) Tampilan pertama
2 x + y + z = 9
x + 2 y – z = 6 -
3 x + 3 y = 15  x + y = 5 …….. (4)
juga untuk (1) dan (3)
2 x + y + z = 9
3 x – y + z = 8 -
- x + 2 y = 1 ………. (5)
kemudian kita eliminasi y dari persamaan (4) dan (5)
x + y = 5 x 2 2 x + 2 y = 10
- x + 2 y = 1 x 1 - x + 2 y = 1 -
3 x = 9
x = 3
Substitusikan x = 3 ke dalam persamaan (4)
x + y = 5
3 + y = 5
y = 5 – 3
y = 2
Substitusikan x = 3 dan y =2 ke dalam persamaan (1)
2 x + y + z = 9
2(3) + (2) + z = 9
6 + 2 + z = 9  z = 9 – 8  z = 1  HP {(3,2,1)}
Jika menggunakan kalkulator maka siswa menekan tombol :
CATALOG S 13 kali ENTER 2nd , 2 , 1
, 1 2nd 9 1 , 2 , (-) 1 2nd 9 3 , (-) 1 , 1 2nd , 2nd , 9 , 6 , 8 2nd ) ENTER
( x – x1 ) ( x - x2 ) = 0
dengan x1 = -2 dan x2 = 5 maka didapat :
penghitungan tanpa kalkulator :
( x – (-2)) ( x – (5)) = 0
( x + 2 ) ( x – 5) = 0
x (x – 5 ) + 2 ( x – 5 ) = 0
x2 – 5 x + 2 x – 10 = 0
x2 – 3 x – 10 = 0
penghitungan dengan kalkulator :
Siswa menekan tombol :
F2 3 ( X + 2 ) ( X - 5 ) , X ) ENTER
x + y = 5 kita sebut persamaan 1 diubah menjadi y = 5- x
2) Kalau dengan kalkulator kita tekan tombol
F2 1 X + Y = 5 , Y ) ENTER
Sehingga tampilan pada layar kalkulator menjadi :
3) Kemudian persamaan y = 5 – x kita substitusikan kedalam persamaan kedua yaitu x + 3y =7. Pengerjaannya menjadi demikian :
x + 3 y = 7
x + 3 (5-x) = 7
x + 15 - 3x = 7
x - 3x = 7 - 15
- 2 x = -8
x = 4
4) Kita cocokkan dengan kalkulator
F2 1 X + 3Y = 7 , X ) 
ENTER ENTER Sehingga tampilan layar menjadi
Pengerjaannya yaitu
x + y = 5
4 + y = 5
y = 5 – 4
y = 1
Jadi himpunan penyelesaiannnya adalah {(4,1)}
F2 1 X + Y = 5 , Y ) 
ENTER ENTER sehingga tampilan layar kalkulator menjadi :
x + 3 y = 7
4 + 3y = 7
3y = 7 - 4
3y = 3
y = 1
Sehingga himpunan penyeleaiannya adalah {(4,1)}
F2 1 X + 3Y = 7 , Y ) 
ENTER ENTER Sehingga tampilan layar menjadi :

By: Marsigit
Basic Competence
• To solve linear inequality with one variable
• To construct the mathematical models for the problems related to linear equation and inequality with one variable.
• To solve the mathematical models for the problems related to linear equation and inequality with one variable.
Illustration:
Truck is a vehicle used to carry heavy and large amount of goods. There are many kind of trucks; it depends on the maximum weight of goods will be carried. In general there are three kinds of trucks such as follows:
• Light weight truck. It carries less than 6.300 kg of goods.
• Middle weight truck. It carries between 6.300 kg and 15.000 kg of goods.
• Heavy weight truck. It carries more than 15.000 kg of goods.
The words : less than, between, and more than are frequently used in linear inequality with one variable.
What will you learn in this Lesson?
• To understand the linear inequality with one variable.
• To solve linear inequality with one variable.
• To apply linear inequality with one variable.
A. Understanding the Linear Inequality with One Variable
1. The Concept of Inequality
• Equality is a state of being equal representing by the sentences connected by the sign “ = “ on both sides.
Example : 5 + 3 = 8
• Equation is a statement of equality between two expressions involving one or more unknown quantities, called variables. The expressions are connected by the sign “ = “
Example : x + 3 = 8
• Inequality is a statement indicating that two quantities are not equal, represented by the symbol <, >, or ≠, meaning less than, greater than, and not equal to.
Example : 5 + 4 ≠ 3
6 + 8 ≥ 7
• Inequality with variable is a statement involving variables indicating that two quantities are not equal, represented by the symbol <, >, or ≠, meaning less than, greater than, and not equal to.
Example : x + 6 ≠ 2
y – 4 > -5
Note :
A statement is a true or false mathematical sentence
Open sentence is a mathematical sentence in which its truth value has not been determined yet.
Example
Determine if the following sentences is an inequality or inequality with variable
1).12 – 3 ≤ 10 2). x + 6 > 3x - 2 3). 7 + 7 ≠ 30 : 2
Solution:
1. The sentence of 12 – 3 ≤ 10 is an inequality
2. The sentence of x + 6 > 3x – 2 is an inequality with variable
3. The sentence of 7 + 7 ≠ 30 : 2 is an inequality
Exercise
Determine if the following sentences is an inequality or inequality with variable
1. x + y ≥ 4
2. 92 ≠ 9 + 9
3. 10 ≤ 100 – 2 + y
4. 2x – 12 ≠ 3
5.6 + 2x < style="font-weight: bold;">2. The Concept of Linear Inequality with One Variable
An inequality that contains one variable of which the power is one is called a linear inequality with one variable.
Example
Write down the following sentences into a linear inequality with one variable.
1. The speed of a car cannot be more than 60 km/hr and cannot be less than 40 km/hr.
2. An air balloon can be ridden by four to six passengers.
Solution:
1. Let the speed of a car is v. You can express “the speed of a car cannot be more than 60 km/hr” as v ≤ 60. “The speed of a car cannot be less than 40 km/hr” can be expressed as v ≥ 40, or 40 ≤ v. Therefore, “The speed of a car cannot be more than 60 km/hr and cannot be less than 40 km/hr” can be written as v ≤ 60 and 40 ≤ v. Thus, it can be simplified as 40 ≤ v ≤ 60.
2. Let, the number of passengers is x, you can write that “An air balloon can be ridden by four to six passengers” as 4 ≤ x ≤ 6.
Exercise
Write down the following sentences into a linear inequality with one variable.
1. Twice of Tanti’s age is less than 32 years.
2. Father’s weight is between 55 to 60 kg.
3. Twice of a number is more than the number decreased by 21.
4. The candidate must be 25 to 30 years old.
5. Five times a number decreased by 11 is more than three times the number decreased by 6.
B. Solving Linear Inequality with One Variable
1. The Concept of Rational Numbers
Rational numbers are the extension of integers and fractions. Therefore rational numbers consist of integers and all fractions.
Rational number is a number that can be written in the form of , where a and b are integers and b ≠ 0.
Example
Determine whether the following numbers is rational number?
1. 3 2. 3.
Solution
1. Three is rational number, because it can be written as , that is .
2. Minus a half is rational number because it is equal to the definition of rational number.
3. is not rational number because it can’t be written as , where a and b are integers and b ≠ 0.
Note :
Try to calculate by your calculator, you’ll find 1,4142 as the result.
Exercise
Which one of the following numbers is rational number?
1. 0 2. 3. 4. 5.
If you want to sketch x > -3, where x is an integer, into line number, you’ll find the following graph.
But, if you want to sketch x > -3, where x is a rational number, you’ll find the following graph.
Why the graphs are so different? The second line tell us that the solutions of x > -3 are not only integers, as -2 or -1, but also fractions as or .
2. The Solutions of Linear Inequality with One Variable
Consider the inequality of t + 2 > 6. To find the solutions of the inequality, first, you pay attention to equation of t + 2 = 6. Then solve it.
The value of t = 4 is called zero value of the inequality of . Try to substitute t by the numbers which is more than 4 or less than 4., i.e. 5 and 3.
• For t = 5, the inequality of will be a true statement, that is .
• For t = 3, the inequality of will be a wrong statement, that is .
Therefore, the solution set of where t are rational numbers, is t > 4.
Example
Find the solution of , where y are natural numbers. Then, sketch the graph of the solution.
Solution
First, find the zero value of the inequality of by changing it into the form of .
both sides are added by 11
both sides are divided by 4
Check for y > 5 and y < y =" 6" y =" 4." y =" 6," y =" 4," y =" 4," y =" 3," y =" 2," y =" 1." style="font-weight: bold;">Exercise
Find the solutions of the following inequalities. Make its line-numbers.
1. , where x are rational numbers.
2. , where x are integers.
3. , where x are whole numbers.
4. , where x are natural numbers less than 15.
5. , where x are rational numbers.
3. The Equivalent of Linear Inequality with One Variable
There are some rules about inequality, i.e. :
1. If both sides are added or subtracted by certain number, the sign of the inequality does not change.
Example :
both sides are subtracted by 6
2. If both sides are multiplied or divided by a positive number (non zero), the sign of the inequality does not change.
Example :
both sides are divided by 2
3. If both sides are multiplied or divided by a negative number (non zero), the sign of the inequality changes into the opposite.
Example :
both sides are divided by (-3)
the sign changes into the opposite
Exercise
Find the solution of the following inequalities.
1. 4.
2. 5.
3.
C. The application of Linear Inequality with One Variable
There are a lot of daily problems that need a linear inequality with one variable as a solution. Generally, you have to change the problems to mathematic sentence first. After that, you can already solve the problems.
Example
Mr Ahmad has a rectangle form of vegetables farm. The wide of the farm is X m and its length is (2x + 5) meters. He will put the bamboos around the farm as a fence. Determine the value of x so that he can put a bamboos 100 meters long!
Solution
He will put the bamboos as a fence 100 meters long. It means the perimeter is not more than 100 m. For example, the farm’s perimeter is K, so K 100.

 both sides are subtracted by 10

 both sides are divide by 6

Hence, in order that 100 m bamboos are enough as a fence, the value of is not more than 15 m.
Exercise
1. A computer shop has one million rupiahs profits for each computer that has been sold. How many computers to sell to get between 20 million and 25 million profits?
2. Mother bought a pizza in a circle form , she divides the pizza into 12 equal parts. Ali gets parts, Tono parts, and Anton parts. Is the rest of pizza bigger than of the whole pizza.
3. An employee will get bonuses if the shop has at least 5 million profits each moth. This year, the shop has Rp 48.000.000 profits. Will the employee get the bonuses?
4. A rectangle has 4 meter long more than its wide. Determine the are of the rectangle if the perimeter is 32 m!
5. A bamboo of 15 meters long is cut into two parts. The first part is 3 meters longer than the other. How long for each part of the bamboo ?

3. Membandingkan Pecahan
Diskusikan bagaimana mengembangkan alat peragayang cukup memadai agar siswa mampu membandingkan pecahan? Jelaskan bagaimana menggunakannya 5. Mengurutkan Pecahan-pecahan
4. Pecahan Desimal
Guru perlu merevitalisasi diri sehingga:
1. Mendudukan dirinya sebagai fasilitator
2. Mampu mengembangkan pembelajaran secara interaktif
5. Mampu mengembangkan skenario pembelajaran:
a. Skema Interaksi: Klasikal, Diskusi Kelompok, Kegiatan Individu
b. Skema Pencapaian Kompetensi: Motivasi, Sikap, Pengetahuan, Skill, dan Pengalaman

Pengembangan Model Pembelajaran Matematika

a. Mengembangkan Lembar Kerja Siswa (LKS)
Manfaat pengembangan LKS :
- menambah beban pekerjaan guru
- memerlukan tambahan biaya
- memerlukan pengetahuan dan ketrampilan guru
- memerlukan kekontinuan pengembangannya
- memerlukan teknik pengelolaan/managemen LKS
b. Pembentukan kelompok belajar
Manfaat pembentukan kelompok belajar :
- mendorong siswa melakukan diskusi
c. Pengembangan metode diskusi kelas/kelompok
Manfaat pengembangan metode diskusi :
- melatih siswa menerima pendapat orang lain
- memperdalam pemahaman suatu konsep
d. Pengembangan alat peraga dan media pendidikan.
Manfaat pengembangan alat peraga dan media pendidikan :
- memberikan variasi kegiatan
- memberikan variasi metode pembelajaran
- memberikan variasi konteks dan suasana pembelajaran
- memperperjelas pemahaman konsep
- penggunaan alat peraga menyita bayak waktu
a. Guru masih mengalami kesulitan dalam memenuhi berbagai macam tuntutan akademik siswa.
b. Guru belum mengembangkan skema untuk mendorong siswa berprestasi rendah untuk meningkatkan prestasinya
